Welcome to Open Streets - Block DWelcome!![]() What is Open Streets?Open Streets is a global initiative that offers communities the opportunity to experience their city streets in a whole new way. Open Streets events temporarily close roadways to vehicles to provide safe spaces for walking, biking, skating, and other social activities. Our events help users reimagine public space to prioritize people over cars, provide easy access to recreation and other health-oriented programming, and promote local economic development by helping support businesses. The District of Columbia began celebrating Open Streets in 2019 at the inaugural event on Georgia Avenue. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is the lead agency for the Open Streets program in the District of Columbia. DDOT offers two types of Open Streets events:

We are thrilled to bring the first Signature Open Streets event of the year through Downtown!
This 1 ½ mile route will connect Shaw, Mount Vernon Square, Chinatown, and Penn Quarter as people ride, bike, walk, socialize, and participate in programming planned exclusively for 7th Street!
Open Streets is designed for people of all ages and backgrounds. Want to ride uninterrupted across multiple different neighborhoods? Care to join a dancing or fitness class with your friends? Do you prefer to sit back and enjoy the line-up of diverse musical performances? How about bringing the kids out to enjoy family-friendly activities in one of downtown’s most popular corridors without the worry of traffic?
All of these are possible at the 7th Street Open Streets event! Kick-off the summer with a safe and exciting way to enjoy our streets!

Do You Have a Business Located on the 7th Street Route?
If you are a business on 7th Street NW, located between Florida Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, click our link to apply and activate the public right-of-way in front of your store!
All applications are due on Sunday, May 8.
Virtual business information sessions will be hosted on the morning of April 18, 2022, and the afternoon of April 19, 2022, before the application due date.
