What is Open Streets?

Open Streets is a global initiative that offers communities the opportunity to experience their city streets in a whole new way. Open Streets events temporarily close roadways to vehicles to provide safe spaces for walking, biking, skating, and other social activities.

Our events help users reimagine public space to prioritize people over cars, provide easy access to recreation and other health-oriented programming, and promote local economic development by helping support businesses. The District of Columbia began celebrating Open Streets in 2019 at the inaugural event on Georgia Avenue.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is the lead agency for the Open Streets program in the District of Columbia. DDOT offers two types of Open Streets events:

  • Signature Events – These events feature a long route of at least 1 ½ miles cutting across multiple Wards and neighborhoods. They feature enhanced programming and entertainment.

  • Open Streets in Your Neighborhood – These events feature shorter routes of approximately ½ mile in length and are intended to increase access to Open Streets and bring the benefits of Open Streets directly to neighborhoods across the District.

Check out our events page and find out which Open Streets events are coming to YOUR neighborhood! Be sure to watch the recap below of our fun transforming 7th Street NW for the community.
